The Web Design Studio provides a full range of Web site development and hosting services to the Columbia University Medical Center community and beyond.

Uploading Your Site Files

In order to upload your web site files onto the staging server, we require that you use secure versions of Telnet and FTP. The secure version of Telnet is called "Secure Shell" or "ssh", and the secure version of FTP is called "Secure FTP" or "sFTP". (Note that the WS_FTP program will not work, but that Secure FTP works, and looks, virtually the same.)

There are many secure programs available for download. Here are our recommended programs which we support:

PC User Secure File Transfer Recommendations

Note that the most recent version of Dreamweaver, Dreamweaver MX 2004, as well as Macromedia's Contribute 2.0, has Secure FTP built-in.

Telnet/Secure FTP

We recommend downloading and installing the non-commercial version of SSH (this is a free license for University work). We have evaluated it, and we know it is compatible with our server. When you go to download SSH, click SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.exe to download. Once downloaded, double-click on that file to start the installation process. Once installed, open the program and click "Quick Connect" and your will see 4 fields to fill in. They should be filled in as follows:
Host Name: cait.cpmc.columbia.edu
User Name: <your user name>
Port Number: 22
Authentication Method: <Profile Settings>

Mac OS X USERS Recommendations

Telnet Replacement:
— SSH is a command line option. Here is how to use it:

  1. Using "Terminal" program to Make a Secure Connection
  2. The Terminal program is in Applications: Utilities on your Macintosh. If you'll be using it frequently, you may want to drag its icon to your Dock so you can start it from there.
  3. Start Terminal.
  4. To connect to CAIT, type the following in the terminal window: ssh username@cait.cpmc.columbia.edu (username is your CAIT username, e.g. abc1234).
  5. Type your password at the CAIT password prompt. You'll be logged into CAIT and can run UNIX programs in the normal way. Remember to log out and quit Terminal when you're through.

FTP

We recommend SFTP for Mac OS X. Information and a download link can be found from downtown's Web site.

If you are using Mac OS 9, there are some products available, but since developers haven't been programming for OS 9 for the last few years, and mass use of Secure FTP is a relatively new concept, there isn't an abundance and none offer free non-commercial licenses. However, here are some to look at if necessary: sFTP

We hope this information helps. However, please feel free to call us at 212-305-1668 with questions or concerns.
