Student FAQs - Wireless Network

Do you provide wireless connectivity?

There are various points of access to the general CUMC wireless network, named either Rome or Athens, in limited parts of the campus. Complete information including instructions on configuring your computer to connect can be found on our wireless page.

How can I connect to the wireless network at CUMC?

To access the wireless network, you need a compatible wireless network card that is 802.11b or WiFi compliant. You must follow the instructions on our wireless page to configure your computer to connect to the wireless network. This may involve downloading and installing a free encryption program depending on the location at which you'd like to connect. An active UNI (Columbia email) account is also required to authenticate on the wireless network.

Where can I connect to the wireless network?

Please see our wireless locations list for current information.

Can I set up my own Wireless Access Point in my room or anywhere else on campus?

No, wireless access points and routers are not allowed on the network. These devices can cause network connectivity problems for other systems in the building if not configured properly, and can also mask what computers are using the network. Due to HIPAA regulations we must have contact information on all systems that connect to the network and cannot allow these devices. Students that have set up an unallowed device on the network risk losing their network connection as well as other disciplinary actions.

Is the wireless network encrypted?

Yes, due to HIPAA regulations the CUMC wireless network requires encryption. It cannot be accessed without using encryption. The Rome access points require Cisco's VPN program, and the Athens access points require WPA (connecting to Athens with a Windows XP computer also requires the SecureW2 program). Complete information on installing and using these types of encryption can be found on our wireless page.

Should I get a Wireless Card or an Ethernet Card?

Since the wireless network does not yet cover the entire CUMC campus, we recommend using an Ethernet card. However, if you can afford it, also get a wireless card for your laptop so you can use the wireless network where available.

What is the difference between the two?

The Wireless card makes a connection to the data network without using a patch cable or wire. Although there is no cable between the network card and the network itself, there is no distinction between a wired and a wireless connection other than speed.

Currently wireless cards can connect up to 11Mb/s as opposed to connection speeds of 100 Mb/s and 1000 Mb/s for wired Ethernet.

With a wired or standard Ethernet connection, you must have a physical cable patched between your computer and the data network at all times.
