If you are a student who will be paying in person, or are ordering a software kit for SAS (any faculty, staff or student), you must wait at least one day before coming to the Information Commons help desk (second floor of the Health Sciences Library) Monday - Friday, between 9am - 5pm. Those who do not require a kit and use a valid FAS account number when ordering will receive instructions to complete the licensing online.
The SAS System is available to the academic community of Columbia University through Information Commons (IC) for running on Windows or Macintosh. The terms of this site license are as follows:
The SAS license costs $195/year for faculty and staff and $125 for students doing their own research. For bulk pricing discounts, see SAS Site License Costs. The license is valid for the time period 9/1/07 through 8/31/08. The price is fixed and will not be pro-rated. The software will not function after the license expires. It is available for renewal on an annual basis. Unix machines are priced by workunits rather than licenses, details for this can also be found on the SAS Site License Costs information.
In addition to the cost of the license, new licenses and upgrades must include the purchase of at least one installation kit at $95 each.
Students licensing SAS software may pay by cash or check made out to "Columbia University". All other payments must be made from a Columbia University FAS account or FFE document.
The licensee is responsible for his/her own installation and setup. You must NOT install more copies of the SAS software than you pay for as per this agreement.
The licensee must abide by United States Export Administration Regulations, 15 C.F.R. 742.15 (2000), restrict access to the versions of SAS/SECURE Software as follows: (a) No versions may be exported to "embargoed" or "terrorist-supporting" destinations or parties, which currently include, but may not always be limited to, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Taliban-controlled parts of Afghanistan, and Yugoslavia; and (b) "Embargoed" or "terrorist-supporting" parties include, but may not always be limited to, (i) any end-user that will use the Software in the design, development, or production of nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons, or missiles; or (ii) any end-user prohibited from participating in transactions with United States entities by the United States government.
The licensee is not permitted to use SAS for commercial or profit-making purposes. Its use is restricted to coursework or academic research endeavors. Should you leave Columbia University during the terms of this license, you are not permitted to continue using this software and you are required to delete or destroy any copies you have installed on non-Columbia owned machines in your control.
Any infringement of the site license agreement becomes the responsibility of the licensee and not Columbia University, i.e. Columbia University shall not be held liable for any direct, indirect, or consequential damages with respect to any claim by the licensee or any third party on account of or arising from this agreement or use of SAS.
In addition to the above conditions, student licensees understand and agree to the following:
In exchange for granting me, as a registered student, the right to possess and use a copy of SAS Institute Inc. software ("Software") on my personal computer or workstation, I agree that:
The Software is the copyrighted property of SAS Institute Inc. ("Institute"). Neither I nor the Educational Institution own the Software or any copies thereof which are being provided to me.
The Educational Institution licenses the Software and annually pays a license fee to enable it to make a limited number of copies available for use by registered students. I agree to use the Software for academic purposes in the U.S. only and understand that any commercial or profit-making use of the Software is strictly prohibited.
Source code underlying the object code provided with the Software ("Source Code") is an Institute trade secret which I am not authorized to access. I may not reverse assemble, reverse engineer, or decompile the Software or otherwise attempt to access the Source Code.
I will not copy the Software and will not permit access to the Software by others.
If I violate the terms of this Agreement, the Educational Institution has the right to take disciplinary action against me and SAS Institute Inc. has the right to take legal action against me.
When I am no longer a registered student of the Educational Institution, or when requested to do so by SAS Institute Inc. or the Educational Institution, I will return my copy of the Software to the appropriate official of the Educational Institution and delete or destroy any copies within my control.
