Macintosh OS 10.5 - How to Connect to Athens Wireless

Athens is the primary wireless network at CUMC, currently available at specific locations. Connecting to Athens on a Macintosh does not require that you install any additional software. Due to encryption protocols, systems running OS versions older than 10.4 will not be able to connect via Athens.

Please note that instructions on this page are for Macintosh OS 10.5 (Leopard), OS 10.4 (Tiger) instructions are available here.

Configuring Macintosh OS 10.5 (Leopard) for Athens

  1. Select the Network icon from your Mac's System Preferences.
  2. Select AirPort from the list of networks on the left, then the Advanced button on the lower right.

  3. Select the 802.1X tab, then User from the Domain menu.

  4. Click on the plus sign in the lower left corner to add a Configuration. Remove the word "Untitled" and type in athens as its name.
  5. Leave the User Name and Password fields blank. Make sure that only TTLS is selected for Authentication.

  6. With TTLS highlighted, select the Configure button at the bottom of the list of Authentication options.

  7. From the pop up window that appears, select PAP under TTLS Inner Authentication, then click on OK to return to the 802.1X window.
  8. Click on OK again to return to the main Network window and save your settings.
  9. Make sure Airport is highlighted in the list on the left, and select the Advanced button in the lower right again.
  10. Select the Airport button from the top menu and click on the plus sign in the lower left to create a new Preferred Network called athens.

  11. In the window that appears, type in athens for the Network Name and select WPA Enterprise for Security.

    For User Name and Password:
    • If you share your computer, leave the User Name and Password blank to be prompted to log in each time you connect to Athens.
    • If you do not share your computer and would like to connect to Athens automatically whenever it's in range, enter your Columbia UNI and password.
NOTE: Be sure that your computer has an initial password protected account for you when it first starts up to prevent anyone who may access your computer from using Athens. You will be held responsible if anyone is logged in under your UNI and violates network or HIPAA policies while connected.

Select athens from the 802.1X drop down menu.
  12. Click on the Add button, then verify that your connection is listed under the Preferred Networks listings.

  13. Click the OK button in the lower right to close the Network window and save your settings. You may have to provide the administrative password for your computer.
  14. Athens is now configured. If your computer detects athens, you will be prompted to login for 802.1X Authentication - use your Columbia UNI and password, and select Continue if prompted to accept the 802.1X certificate.

Logging In to Athens

  1. When Athens is in range, you should be able to see it listed by clicking on the Mac's wireless icon in the upper right of the computer screen.

Click on athens to connect to this network.
  2. The 802.1X Authentication window should appear, type in your UNI and its password to connect.

NOTE: If you saved your login and password when configuring the Athens network, you may not be prompted to log in each time you connect.
  3. If prompted, select Continue to accept the 802.1X server certificate.
  4. Once you have authenticated, you will be connected to Athens and can use the CUMC secured wireless network.
