Windows Vista - How to Connect to Athens Wireless

Athens is the newest wireless network at CUMC, currently available at specific locations. It is fine to configure your system to connect to both Rome and Athens wireless locations and install both types of software required on computers running Windows Vista. Configuring Athens

You must have Administrative privileges on your Windows Vista computer in order to install and configure for Athens. If you do not please contact the technical support group for your department. Using Athens involves the following:

1. Downloading and installing the free SecureW2 program.
2. Add the Athens Network to your computer's network profile.
3. Configure Athens Security.

In addition, your computer should have all of its recent Windows updates, and may require software updates for its wireless card and BIOS as well if it cannot connect. 

1. Download and install the SecureW2 Athens program
   1. Go to http://www.securew2.com/products/, select the link for Vista and follow the instructions on the site to install SecureW2.  A copy of the file can also be obtained from The Information Commons Help Desk on the 2^nd floor of the Library.
   2. Restart your computer.  You will not be able to connect if you haven’t restarted!
      
      
2. Add the Athens Network to your computer's network profile
   1. Open the Control Panel (click the Start icon in the lower left corner of the computer screen, then Control Panel from the menu that appears).
   2. Select the Network and Internet link on the left, then Connect to a Network under the Network and Sharing Center heading:

       

   3. At the next window, select Manage wireless networks from the Tasks list on the left.
   4. Select the Add button (next the green plus sign).
   5. Select Manually create a network profile, and use the entries and choices shown below:
      
      
      • Network name: type in athens
      • Security type: select WPA-Enterprise
      • Encryption type: select TKIP
      • Check off Start this connection automatically
        
        
      Select the Next button after double-checking these settings and continue with the steps below.

3. Configure Athens Security
   1. Select the Security tab in the properties window.
      
      
      
      
   2. Make sure that WPA-Enterprise is listed as the Security type, and that TKIP is listed for the Encryption type. If not, use the drop down arrows on the right of each field to change.
   3. Use the drop down arrow in the Choose a network authentication method field to select SecureW2 TTLS from the drop down list.
   4. Select the Settings button to open the SecureW2 Profile configuration window.
   5. To configure the Default profile in the SecureW2 Profile window, select the Configure button.
      
      
      
      
   6. In the SecureW2 Profile DEFAULT window, clear (de-check) the Use alternate outer identity check box.
      
      
      
      
   7. Select the Certificates tab and clear the Verify server certificate check box.
      
      
      
      
   8. Select the Authentication tab; verify that PAP appears in the Select Authentication Method: box. If it does not, use the drop down arrow to select it.
      
      
      
      
   9. Select the User Account tab. Depending on your preference you can configure your computer to connect to Athens automatically or to prompt you to login each time you connect; however if your computer contains sensitive data or is used by others you should set it to Prompt user for credentials (login each time).
      • To have SecureW2 prompt you to log in with your UNI and password each time you connect to Athens, leave the Prompt user for credentials box checked.
        
        
        
        
      • To have SecureW2 save your login, deselect the Prompt user for credentials box and enter your UNI for the Username, your UNI password for the Password, and leave the Domain field blank.
        
        
   10. Select the OK button to save the SecureW2 configuration, then OK again to save the Athens Wireless Network configuration. If you selected Prompt user for credentials in step 9 above, you will see the window shown here when connecting to Athens. Enter your UNI and password for authentication, leaving the Domain field blank, and select OK.
       
       
       
       
   11. When you have authenticated, you will see a window stating you have Successfully connected to Athens.  Note: You may have to enter your credentials a few times.

When your computer detects an Athens access point, you should see a pop-up bubble in the lower right corner of your computer screen. Double-click on this to access the SecureW2 Credentials window prompting you to logon.
