VPN for Windows 98 and ME
Please see our main VPN page for general information regarding the program and its uses.
Windows 98 and ME are no longer supported by CUMC IT or Columbia; these instructions are provided as a courtesy.
NOTE: These installations are for West Campus only. To use them, your primary affiliation must be with the Columbia University Medical Center. If your primary affiliation is with New York-Presbyterian Hospital, please go to http://infonet.nyp.org/technology/ or call extension 4-Help for assistance.
Installing VPN on Windows 98 or ME
Click here to download the VPN program. Save the file to a preferred location on your computer, and double-click on it after the download completes to unzip. NOTE: You will need a compression utility program such as WinZip to extract the file. Please visit http://www.winzip.com for more information.
Find the zip folder and double-click on the "Setup.exe" file inside to start the VPN installation. If you see a Security Warning stating that the publisher could not be verified, select "Run".
At the Setup window, select "Next" to begin the installation.
At the next window, Select Yes to accept the Software License Agreement.
Select "Next" to accept the default Destination Folder for the VPN program.
Select "Next" again to create the VPN program folder.
Depending on your operating system you may see the message that "The VPN Client can not be installed....", pictured below. Select "Yes" to continue.
The installation will begin, displaying the window below as it progresses. The window may remain on your screen for a few minutes.
If you receive messages stating that the software has not passed Windows Logo testing, select "Continue Anyway". These may appear as a small flashing message on the bottom of your computer's window, labeled "Hardware Installation"; click directly on the message to view the entire window.
When the installation has finished, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please select "Yes, I want to restart my computer now", then click "Finish". NOTE: You must restart your computer after the install or you will not be able to use VPN successfully.
The VPN program must now be configured with the Connection Entries you would like to use. Open the program by selecting the Start icon in the lower left corner of your computer screen, then "Programs" - "Cisco Systems VPN Client" -"VPN Dialer". The Cisco VPN Client window will open.
Click here to access the required West Campus entry settings. A UNI login is required.
Select "New" to create a new entry, and type in the Connection Entry name obtained in step 12 for "Name of the new connection entry":
The Description field is optional; you can type in whatever description makes sense for the entry you will be using, or leave it blank.
Type in the IP address you obtained in step 12 above and select "Next".
Type in the Group Name and password you obtained in step 12. You will have to type in the password in both the middle and bottom field. Select "Next".
Select "Finish" to save the entry. It will now be available as an option from the Connection Entry drop down field.
Connecting to VPN
If not already open, find the VPN program from the "Start" - "Programs" listing on your computer and double-click to open.
Select your desired Connection Entry from the drop down menu and double-click on the "Connect" button.
To connect from off site, select West Campus Remote Access . You must already be connected to the Internet in order for the connection to work.
To connect to the Rome wireless network on campus, select West Campus Rome Wireless . Your computer's wireless card must already be connected to Rome in order for VPN to work.
Enter your Columbia UNI and Password (if you have an NYP NetID, this will work as well). Then select "OK".
At the next pop up window, select "Continue"; you are now securely connected with VPN.
When you are done using the network, please remember to disconnect:
Open the VPN client window again, as in step 1 of Connecting to VPN above.
Double-click on the "Disconnect" icon in the upper left corner of the VPN window. After a moment, the status of the client will read "Not Connected". You can then close VPN.
