Connecting to the Wireless CUMC Network

CUMC has three wireless networks available on campus:

  • Athens and Rome are the secured wireless networks, and require a login and special configuration on your computer in order to connect.
  • The Wireless Guest Network (broadcast as guest-net) is not secured. It does not require special configuration other than selecting this network for your wireless card's connection and agreeing to the Terms and Conditions and Acceptable Use page. Only basic services such as web browsing and email are allowed.

Wireless is only available at certain locations on campus.

Please take the following into consideration when deciding which network to use:

  • Faculty, staff and students should always use one of the secured networks. They are absolutely required when working with patient data and other sensitive information. Many academic, research, and work-related applications and sites are not available unless connected to Athens or Rome.
  • It is recommended to use Athens whenever possible. Rome should only be configured on older systems that do not have the necessary wireless authentication and encryption protocols, or for use as a back up method.
  • Support for guest-net limited to verifying whether the network is currently operational. Basic instructions on connecting are provided here as a courtesy only.

Athens and Rome - Configuring your Computer
Athens and Rome require different configurations depending on your computer's operating system; please see the appropriate instructions found under each link. It is fine to install both types of software necessary for Rome and Athens as they will not conflict with each other.

As with the Wired network, all computers must first:

  1. Have received all critical updates and patches for their operating systems
  2. Have updated antivirus and antispyware programs running
  3. Be free of viruses, trojans, and other malicious programs

Please be sure to have existing systems scanned for these prior to registration, or they could be blocked from the network.

Connecting to guest-net
The Wireless Guest Network does not require special configuration or login. Your computer can connect by selecting "guest-net" from the list of networks your computer's wireless card sees within range.

Once connected, your web browser will be redirected to a disclaimer page listing the Terms and Conditions and Acceptable Use for the Wireless Guest Network. You must select "I Agree" at the bottom of the page in order to use guest-net.
